OUR HELP

Here we collected useful links and resources for those who have just arrived in Canada and need help

Information is valid as of June 2022

Step 1 Work Permit (work permit)

At the first airport of arrival in Canada, you need to tell the officer that you need to get a Work Permit. You will need to give your passport and wait in line. When it is ready, an officer will call you to check the information.

Be sure to indicate on the document that you came under the CUAET program, this is necessary for you to receive financial assistance.

Step 2 SIN number (social security number)

To work in Canada, open a bank account, or access government programs and benefits, you need this 9-digit number.

It can be made in Red Deer, Calgary, and Edmonton at Service Canada offices. You need to bring a passport, a work permit and the address where you live.

The application can be filled out online, but you will have to wait up to a month. If you apply online, you can work immediately after applying. You only need to say that you applied.

You cannot apply for a SIN at Olds.

You need to come to the Service Canada office right before the opening or a little earlier.

We went for SIN  in Calgary and arrived half an hour after opening - stood in line for 3.5 hours - did it in half an hour. In Red Deer, the whole process took people about 1 hour.

Important: The SIN number must be shown only at the bank when opening an account, when applying for a job and when receiving a financial statement. help. Do not lose this number and do not give anyone on the phone.

Step 3 Phone number

It's different for different operators.

We bought 1 pc Koodo sim-cards from Walmart for CAD$ 10

On the Koodo website, you need to register, select a tariff, and phone number, and pay with a visa card. You will have to give a Canadian card, as the site may not accept foreign cards. Arrange with someone to help and give the cash.

Only after that, the number will be activated if you purchased a SIM card without a tariff.

At Walmart, you could take a SIM card already with a tariff, but I don’t know the details.

Step 4 Open a bank account

Choose any bank.

Making an appointment is mandatory.

Bring with you a foreign passport, work permit, and SIN, and be ready to provide a phone number and email.

we opened accounts with CIBC. It took 1.5 hours for two people.

When you have an account, you can change the currency in the bank.

Tell the bank that you also need a credit card to create a credit history now (comes by mail, wait up to 3 weeks)

Step 5 Financial Aid

Step 7 Medical checkup

Within 3 months it must be completed by everyone.

Keep receipts, because. insurance can cover half.

If you already have insurance, then the x-ray will be free

In total for everything about 90 - 300 CAD

You need to make an appointment with each doctor (to make an appointment) and you can’t get around everyone in one day

on this site there is a list of places where you can get an inspection, even if you are not in Canada, but then you need to show the conclusion to the officer when receiving a Work Permit at the airport. A work Permit with health inspection differs from Work Permit without inspection in that it has no restrictions on working with children and in medical care institutions.

if you are going to work with children or in healthcare - you will need to change your Work Permit. (where and how I do not know)

First you need to make an appointment. It's cheaper and faster in Red Deer, so they did it there.

then we chose a day and time that is convenient for us

then, in the bank's online application, you need to find the INTERAC e-Transfer option

Choose to whom to send “St Maria and email: im4canada@gmail.com - in the message indicate the name, time, month and year. (without dots, commas and dashes)

for each person, whether a child or an adult, a $50 CAD deposit is required. (take a photo of the screen with this payment with you and remind the clinic to take this money into account)

The day before the inspection, a bot will call you and remind you of the appointment.

After passing the medical assessment, you will need to pay another $50 in cash for a child, and another $130 for an adult. The doctor will also write out a referral for blood donation and x-rays.

Step 8. Remove restrictions from Work permit
